And the answer is....

There are two turkeys perched in this tree – an adult and a chick.

Turkeys are such large and awkward-looking birds that many people assume they can’t fly, but they can. Turkeys  roost in trees at night, fly into trees for protection, and even eat the tender buds at the tips of tree branches in the spring.

This picture was taken during the summer, when baby turkeys have hatched and are growing up. This chick had grown enough to be able to fly well, and when mama and baby were disturbed they both flew to safety on this branch.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We at LEEP are grateful for all of you!

And the answer is....

This is the broken egg of a wild turkey, found at the edge of the forest behind Baker Chapel. We found at least three eggs in this one spot.

Wild turkeys make their nests on the ground in dead leaves at the bases of trees, under brush piles or thick shrubbery, or occasionally in open fields or meadows.

Turkeys begin to lay eggs in April and early May, laying one egg a day until the nest contains 8-15 eggs. After the last egg is laid, the hen begins to incubate them all. The baby turkeys, called poults, generally begin to hatch in June. This nest was probably pilfered by a predator. Animals that might eat turkey eggs include raccoons, opossums, skunks, gray foxes, groundhogs, and snakes. If a turkey’s initial nest fails to produce poults, the hen will often lay another clutch of eggs in a new nest.

When you are out in nature, take some time to observe all around you, at various heights, including on the ground – you might find surprising things!

The tracks in the blue circles are of a turkey, walking away from the viewer.

The tracks in the red circle are of a rabbit, hopping towards the viewer. The two rabbit prints closest to the viewer are of the rabbit’s hind feet as they swing forward and hit the ground together side by side.

One of the (few?) nice things about the late snows we’ve been getting this spring is that they provide a great opportunity to see more animal tracks!
